I thought about the six books. I thought about Arthur. She'll know that. I thought about a woman reading to feel less alone for twenty-nine years and the specific and worn spines of the books she had returned to and the receipt used as a bookmark and the full and attentive quality of a person who was genuinely inside a book, genuinely finding in it the thing she had gone looking for. I thought: she opened the first one. I thought: she is telling me she opened the first one. I thought: she is telling me she knows.

It doesn’t matter that I don’t see any; I’m aware of them now. I climb the stairs and can’t resist pushing on a door that’s partially open—cameras or no. It’s directly across the hall when I reach the landing. I’m excited to find that it’s a library with books lining tall oak shelves. There are two comfortable reading chairs and behind them a large business desk. I wonder if this is Moon’s office. Snooping in different rooms is one thing. Who would have guessed he reads. My curiosity gets the better of me and matches it. The first book I spot one hundred years of solitude. I haven't read it so I decide to move to the next, The Great Gatsby. Am familiar with it so I pick it off the shelf and sit on his bed. The book is dusty like it hasn't been read in a while. Am so absorbed in it until someone snatches it away from me. "Get out!" I look up. Quinn is staring at me super mad.

The food tasted good, and I complemented the chef. I freshened up, picked up one of my books and started to read, and within minutes, I fell asleep. The singer was way off-key, but everyone looked genuinely delighted. For people this lonely, hearing any singing itself was beautiful. It didn't matter whether it was good or not. Rosalyn stood silently by the door without going in. Watching their smiling faces that still couldn't hide their loneliness, she suddenly recalled a line from One Hundred Years of Solitude: 'In the end, all you're left with is your lonely self.' Looking at these elderly folks proved the quote right. Everyone would end up the same, so what was the point of fighting over love and scrambling for money? Did any of it matter in the end?

Alright, I can relate to this freaking corny book. I drank water while still reading and I choked after realizing what happened to the couple in the story after their argument. Cursing in my head, I continued coughing as I felt my neck getting hot because of some sensual images flashing in my mind. I remember Solana's body against mine after she jumped to me naked when she saw a cockroach. I remember the time we made out in our living area. I remember the taste of her lips and her lovely smell. My breathing hitched as I continued reading. The characters are now making love passionately.
