The ledger on the kitchen table had a new page: names of the dead, names of the living, things that had gone missing that we weren’t going to mourn (three cameras, a rope that Jason would pretend to be emotional about, half a bottle of decent rye, innocence).
Jason handed Orion a hand-drawn map when he returned with the pale light. “Cameras here, here, here,” he said, tapping trees. “Two more likely here if your father’s learned to respect elevation. The ash-eye scrapes to humiliate us are thick in the gully. Smash those too.”
