“Let me review the details for you.” A picture of an old man appeared. “Garrett Norman is a chemist and has a factory called ‘oracle’, founded a new and rare metal called ‘oryx’ and crafted a weapon called the orb. Orb works like a nuclear bomb but is more compact, in the form of a diamond.” He paused. “It is powerful enough to kill an entire nation with a single strike. The government and every other illegal organization are after Garrett. We need to get it before anyone else.”

The surface shimmered faintly in the torchlight, as though the moon itself bore witness. "Then speak the Oath." Orrin began the words, his tone steady, and Darian repeated after him. "I renounce Crescent Moon and its Alpha. I renounce the blood that tied me to them, and the vows that bound me. I give myself freely to Nightshade, to its Alpha, and to its Luna. My loyalty is theirs. My strength is theirs. My life is theirs. From this day forward, I am Nightshade." The words carried weight, and I was sure that they all realized it themselves, yet they did it—not out of debt to us, nor simply because they wanted shelter and Nightshade happened to take them in.

Then another voice spoke, softer, from behind the line of hunters.

My mate, yes, but before that, a free woman. And if I ever forget that truth, may this oath burn me until I remember it.” The light exploded. It didn’t throw us backward. It didn’t hurt. It was as if the entire clearing inhaled and then exhaled inside us.
