Her Reckoning
Grim strode in, his presence filling the room like thunderclouds, Ghost close behind.
“What’s happening?” Grim demanded, eyes sharp on the machines.
“She’s spiking,” the nurse explained quickly. “Could be a sign she’s battling the trauma. But it’s dangerous — the body can only sustain this kind of stress for so long before the heart gives out.”
Rhett’s chest seized. “Don’t say that. Don’t you fucking say that.”
Grim’s hand clamped on his shoulder, iron-strong. “Steady, son.”
But Rhett shook him off, stepping closer to the bed. He dropped back into the chair, grabbing Emily’s hand with both of his, his voice trembling but fierce.
