Not controlled. Camille blinked again like she had done something impressive. “You seem pleased with yourself.” Her fingers opened slowly, blindly searching until they found his hand. Then curled around one finger with surprising determination. And Orion smiled. Not the faint, barely-there version he gave most people. Not the calm expression he wore like armor. A genuine smile. Warm enough to soften his entire face.

I asked. She nodded. I took it. Surprisingly, the paper was completely dry and neat. I unfolded it carefully. The handwriting wasn’t childish at all. "The gloomy weather needs your smile to make it beautiful again. You don't know this, but your smile is my favorite kind of sunshine. This rose is just a small reminder that someone out there finds you breathtaking. Smile for me?" My breath caught.

That was it. I turned back slowly, pasted on my most deranged smile, leaned just a little too close to their table and said sweetly, “You’re right. I am slow. That’s why I need you to speak extra clearly when ordering next time so I don’t accidentally bring you a personality instead of a salad. God forbid.” Their jaws dropped in sync like synchronized swimmers.

“You’re messing with me, aren’t you? I can never tell when you do that? Why don’t you smile or something?” Why don’t you smile. You wouldn’t believe the amount of times I’d heart this question. I gave him the answer I always did. “I don’t smile.” Simple and short. “But you do.” I looked at him. “Excuse me?” “You do smile. When you’re stepping on the skulls of your enemies. It’s a scary sort of smile.” I shrugged. “Guess that’s the only thing that brings me joy.”
