But my pulse was already climbing before we'd even touched gloves, a low, restless hum under my skin that had nothing to do with adrenaline, and underneath it, quieter, something that felt almost like dread. My ears caught the drip of a leaking pipe somewhere behind the lockers, the buzz of the overhead lights, someone's phone vibrating three rows of benches away. All of it too loud, too sharp, crowding in at once the way it had the last time, right before everything in me had gone wrong.
