A Gateless Town In the valley of Lowen’s Bend, I found a town that had never once heard of the gates. No trials. No sigils. No Hollow history. They lived by the sun and moon, by planting and song. And yet… when I listened closely, I heard echoes of the very same truths we’d carved into the Spiral Tree. One child whispered, “Kindness is the strongest kind of magic.” A mother said, “Sometimes, you break to grow.” And an old woman smiled as she offered me tea, saying, “We carry each other. Always.”

“We’re just going for a walk. Not war.” Domonic didn’t move. But he didn’t stop me either. Good. I stepped around him, Conner following, his hand gently pressing to the small of my back as we moved down the ramp and onto solid land. The town was exactly what I needed. Dusty brick alleys lined with cafés and locals sweeping doorsteps. Small stores cluttered with trinkets and handmade goods. It was all afternoon sunlight and salt air and the smell of grilled fish wafting from the docks. We wandered for hours. I found a tiny glass charm shaped like a fox and picked it up, turning it between my fingers. “I like it,” I said without thought.

But how? Could he have left his company to live in such a small simple town? But CJ is so serious when it comes to work. He would never do that. Then what could have brought him to this town? Maybe a vacation with his perfect little family? A little get away from the noise in the big city?

2. It was my first visit to Clifton Heights Junior/Senior High School. Right from the start, I thought Clifton Heights was a strange town. Nothing obviously wrong with it. Not on the surface, anyway. Place was the same as any of the hundreds of towns I’d visited over the last twenty years. Homey little department and hardware stores, restaurants, and knick-knack shops. A town hall, three churches, the requisite small town diner and two high schools. A library, a lumber mill, and a little creek running past the town, with a bridge over it called Black Creek Bridge.

I could see the affection in his eyes when he looked at the place. Fairbook had an old-world charm that I hadn’t expected. The streets were lined with small shops, local cafés, and a few vendors selling fresh produce. Unlike the city, where everything was fast-paced and transactional, this town felt like a place where people actually knew each other. We were walking past a small bookstore when Richard suddenly stopped. “Well, look who it is,” he said, his voice tinged with amusement. I followed his gaze and saw Cain standing near one of the cafés, casually checking his phone.

When I come back out, Keenan tosses me my shoes like we’re late for something important. “You’re going to like them,” he says as we walk out. “Or at least tolerate them. Which is the same thing for you.” “I tolerate you,” I shoot back. He grins. “Exactly.” The town is small in a way that feels almost unreal. No tall buildings. No rush. People actually stop when they talk instead of walking and texting and half listening. Keenan waves at everyone like he owns the place. “That guy sells fish,” he says, pointing. “That woman gossips like it’s her job. That kid stole my bike when I was twelve.”

"I'll do that Mr. Sinclair, I'll do that" We hug goodbye and then I get back to the ride to hell. I watch as the town pass me by and the sun has shown its head for the day. This town has a special place in my heart and every scene is a beautiful piece of art to me. The snow makes every corner of this town play out like a fairytale that's decorated with the theme of Christmas.

It's been almost two years since I left this town to go live with my gram and I ought to be excited by returning but that's far from it. Yes, I'm not happy. How could I be?
