I groaned, running my hand over my face. My brother simply laughed. “Good luck with that. I’m off to tell Azriel and then mom you forgot Valentine’s Day. And your first Valentine’s with André.” Colby waved as the screen went black. The fucker disconnected. I groaned, slamming my head into my desk. ‘Cardinal, how did you let me forget?’

Thorne’s card mirrored it, but the caption was in my handwriting: Because I was tired of being afraid. Remy’s card: a coyote howling at a moon made of broken promises. Caption: Because someone had to keep laughing when the world ended. Celeste’s: a skateboard made of frozen blood, twin tails streaming like comet fire.

Her eyes watered slightly, a huge grin on her glowing face. "Happy Valentine's day bestie." Bryan handed Maeve hers, making it work in one trip. "Thanks papi." She kissed his cheek. "Happy Valentine's day cousin." Raymond handed Tiana her gifts. "Thanks cousin." She pulled him into a hug. "Happy Valentine's day everyone." Jack and Tim shared their own gifts to the ladies, while he held on to Teq's. "Thank you." The ladies responded with hugs. "Happy Valentine's day mami." Storm showed Teq her gifts seeing as he couldn't move them all in a minimum of three trips.

"Alpha." "Valentine," Vaela says, gesturing toward me. "Fiorenca." "Frankie," I correct automatically. Vaela clicks her tongue. "That is not your name." "It really is." Valentine beams, she's been handed a new puppy, she lunges forward. Her arms pull me in an enthusiastic hug. I'm struck by how genuine she is, there isn't a single sharp edge hiding underneath her warmth. I've spent enough time with shitty ass people to know kindness is often transactional. Valentine's isn't. The empathy pouring off her feels limitless. It almost hurts.
