The plan has been drawn up, it has been executed, and we were ready to witness the fallout.

Liya said, pointing to a smear of red across my palette. I snorted. “It’s literally just red.” “No, Madam, it’s blood orange,” she insisted with all the seriousness in the world. “See? It’s the shade of your husband’s temper.” Leina choked on a laugh, covering her mouth like she wasn’t allowed to find that funny. “Don’t drag me into your nonsense,” I muttered, dragging the brush across the canvas anyway. “It’s just crimson.” “Crimson,” Leina repeated softly, testing the word like it belonged in her mouth. “Sounds like trouble.”

Everything about this day would soon be stained with red. I didn't run downstairs. Not immediately. Instead, I stood frozen, watching the dark red paint creep through the fabric fibers of my dress, blooming like blood. The canvas before me,nearly finished after weeks of work,suddenly looked childish and trivial. A commission for a local gallery that had once seemed so important.

It was full of overlapping unearthly figures. I bobbed my head. "Game," I said after I assessed. "The blue one is Isla's. Rhyme designed the gray one. The red and black were painted by Boston. The pink and yellow was owned by Thunder," I guessed. "Yuck!" Thunder immediately reacted. "I'm not that weird to paint such colors! I'm not the cheesy one who will choose your favorite colors..." Thunder was not able to finish what she was about to say when Rhyme faked a cough.

Normal people. But I wasn’t normal. I wasn’t doing this because I had to do it. And even when I did picture myself wielding a paintbrush, I was doing it with a brighter color, losing concentration to splash that color on the person meant to help me paint. Right now, I was alone, and the only color I would now have to splash on that person was red.

"What did old man Fred say about your new piece?" "It was rough," I admitted, taking a sip of my coffee. "He wasn't happy with my latest painting." She raised an eyebrow. "Really? Your work was amazing." I smiled at her words. "Thanks. But apparently, it wasn't good enough for him." I went on to explain the critique I received, and Bella listened intently. "You know what," she said after I finished talking. "Screw him. Your art is beautiful and unique, and that's what matters."

Once she was done, she asked Paige with a smile, “Do you like it, madam?” Paige glanced at her nails and nodded happily. “Yes, they’re beautiful. Thank you. “Though… do you think the red is too much?” Paige asked. She would usually go for pastel pink when getting her nails done. Her nails had never been so vividly red. The color brought out the fairness of her skin. “You’re the queen of the house, and royalty deserves red,” Gloria said. Paige glanced at Gloria in shock. What was that supposed to mean? The queen of the household deserved red?

I scoffed quietly. The same words, the same actions, the same expression. Blood poured from below her belly, staining the seat of my Ferrari. "Madeline! Please hold on, it's a red light!" Madeline clutched her belly, her voice rising in a sharp, piercing tone. "Matt, are you trying to kill me? You've got to run the red light! I can't take it anymore!" I twirled my finger absentmindedly on the steering wheel. "Madeline, running the red light is illegal and I'll get a fine. We should be good citizens, right?"

I squeezed paint onto my palette without planning colors, just grabbing tubes randomly, because this piece wasn't about aesthetics, it was about releasing emotions I couldn't contain. Red for anger at myself for falling for someone who'd tried to destroy me. Blue for the sadness of losing Rafael's friendship because I couldn't give him what he wanted. Black for the confusion of not knowing if Alexander's feelings were real or just another manipulation. Gold for the hope that maybe we could build something genuine despite our horrible beginning. I started painting with broad, aggressive strokes, letting my hands move without conscious thought, while my mind spiraled through everything that ha
