"I lost an earring. A pearl earring. It rolled under the bed." Raphael didn't say anything. He just stared at her with an unreadable expression. Then, he slowly lifted his uninjured hand. He uncurled his long fingers. Resting perfectly in the center of his large palm was her glittering, three-carat diamond wedding ring. It caught the light of the bedside lamp, practically mocking her. Claire stopped breathing. The blood completely drained from her face. "Funny," Raphael said, his voice dangerously low and smooth. He picked up the ring between his thumb and forefinger, holding it up to the light. "I don't remember Cartier making house calls."

Right next to the plastic ring I got you. She rolled her eyes but felt her cheeks flush. She picked up the little plastic ring from her nightstand, the one he’d given her two weeks ago at the lake when they’d made a dumb bet over skipping rocks. A sand bag and other boxing equipment hung off to the side but I barely noticed, my sole attention was on the person who stood right in the middle of the ring, conversing with a guy who was obviously a trainer, while wrapping tape around her knuckles slowly. The stopped attendant politely spoke as she took me around the store. I stopped in front of the rings section when something caught my attention.. It was a beautiful couple's 0.7 carat diamond ring.. Then she reached over and slipped the ring onto my ring finger. And it probably didn't escape anyone around that her hands and mine were shaking. I cursed under my breath and laughter erupted from the front rows. Tate quickly wiped the tears from her face and I pulled her ring from the pillow Matt handed me with a hesitant smile. It was also made of white gold with the date on the inside, but unlike my piece, it was decorated with a clear diamond that was discreetly set in its center. I took my own slip of paper with the promise written on it from Chad and looked at it briefly before my gaze drifted back to Tate.

Neil murmured inaudibly, "Drink… Come on! Aurelia, I-I'll beat them all! See who dares to woo you…" Aurelia froze and suddenly tasted salt at the corner of her lips. "Don't you worry. The center stone was just the right size, and the diamond had a round cut. But I discovered that the prongs holding it in place were actually designed to look like leaves. They were so small and delicate that I didn’t notice them right away. The metal was rose-colored, and the band was thin, making the stone’s head appear as if it floated on my ring finger. The ring was so beautiful that if I saw it in any jewelry shop, I would choose it, too.
