Her mark flared brightly, but instead of relief, it brought only pain. “Why does it always end like this?” she mumbled, tears running down her face. He was back at the packhouse or at least, it looked like it. The familiar walls and chairs were there, but everything was off. The colors were dull, the air strangely still. Through each crack, a billion glowing, greedy eyes stared down from another world. Luckily, my words didn’t sound too slurred. He smiled and turned to the bartender… who amazingly enough came right over. Everyone who had been waiting for a drink looked over, jealous. The girls kept looking at the guy holding my hand. There was something about him that made him impossible not to look at. If I hadn’t grown up around werewolves I would probably be staring at him too. Werewolves have this amazing ability to attract all the attention around them when they wanted it, and the older, more experienced ones could blend in like they were invisible if they needed to too.

"That's heroic, not a failure." Lucy wanted to believe him. But the weight of revelation after revelation was crushing. Catherine made a small sound, drawing their attention. Her tiny face scrunched up, her mouth opening in what looked like a yawn. "She's so peaceful," Lucy said. "She has no idea how complicated the world is. How much darkness exists."
