Zuri was walking slowly toward a pile of heavy limestone rubble near the edge of the Bastion—the remnants of the barricade Mwajuma had summoned to block the initial charge. Beneath the jagged grey rocks, something shifted. A low, wet, agonizing groan rattled from the debris. It was one of the first beasts Mwajuma had launched backward with her stone pillars. It had not fallen off the edge. Its lower half was completely crushed beneath the limestone, its legs pulverized into dark, useless meat. The creature was dragging itself forward by its massive, grey-skinned arms, leaving a thick trail of glowing purple ichor on the wood.

Their lips were just an inch apart, and she kept wondering if he was going to kiss her. Liam, on the other hand, was fighting a battle within himself as both Rage and Rocky fought for dominance while he pinned Zoe to the wall. He still didn’t understand why Rocky seemed to act differently around this stranger. No one among his wolf form had ever challenged Rage before. "Know your place, Rocky!" Rage growled angrily as Rocky tried to destroy his happy moment with the girl. "That is my mate. You don’t treat her that way!" Rocky snapped angrily. "I don’t care! I will treat her as I wish. Now stop disturbing my blissful moment!" Rage yelled.

Beside him, his daughter, Socha, fought with a cold ferocity. She was lean and fast, her claws digging into the charcoal skin of the abominations, but even their combined strength was barely holding the line. They were losing as the sheer speed of the black-eyed creatures was overwhelming the rogue pack. Suddenly, a streak of obsidian lightning crashed out of the woods. Zoran’s wolf didn't just enter the fight, he instantly dominated it. He lunged at the abomination that was about to sink its blades into Marek’s neck, his massive jaws snapping the creature’s spine like a dry twig.
