Then, sudden stillness, the wind died.
“Open them,” he whispered.
I did, and gasped. We were surrounded by vast, untouched snow. A mountain loomed nearby, its slopes dusted in silver frost, and at its base, a frozen lake, glistening like a sheet of glass.
“I… I don’t understand,” I breathed. “Where are we?”
“Far north,” he said, dropping the bag and kneeling. He pulled out something I hadn’t seen in years, ice skates.
I was too stunned to speak, he remembered.
