A pool of her blood was forming around her and her eyes were wide open. Behind Vanessa stood a woman, I hadn't met her before but she held a knife and stared daggers at Vanessas lifeless corps. The knife dropped from her hands as she turned her head and kneeled down in front of Percy. He was on the floor and barely breathing. I ran over to him and fell to the floor next to the woman. ’Mark him’ What? ’Mark him! it will strengthen him’ I touched the mark he had given me and looked at his pale neck.

“But I figure…maybe you can fill it in? You know it all by memory, don’t you?” Jackson stares at the book for a second and then reaches out a hesitant finger, touching it. The page ripples almost like the surface of water and I squeak in surprise as, suddenly, a map materializes on the page. “This is insane,” he whispers, baffled and – I can tell – just a little bit thrilled that this is even possible. “It’s so cool!” I squeak, holding the book closer to him with one hand and staring at the map. “Okay, so like, what do these marks mean? And these numbers?” I trace my fingers over the map, trying to follow the action and decode the meanings.

I couldn’t leave the entire burden to my Gamma, not with lives at stake. I had to go, but how could I leave her? I didn’t want to wake her, didn’t want to see confusion or fear in her eyes. So I did the one thing I had to, I marked her while she slept. My mark glowed faintly on her skin, a promise, a claim, a bond. Then I left a note beneath the lamp by the bedside, explaining everything. I prayed she’d read it. I prayed she’d wait. Now that my pack is safe, and protected, I returned without delay. It was late when we arrived at Duskwind Circle, but I didn’t care. I went straight to Kellan, heart racing.

The life we led with Alester was less than lacking. I took the lid off, smelling that familiar scent of his. My throat thickened with sadness, making it hard for me to swallow. My hands shook as I grabbed Percy’s favorite black shirt. I sniffed it, trying to engrave that scent into memory. I held it close as I continued to investigate the contents of the box further. There was a large book inside with a bookmark halfway through it. It seems Percy never got the chance to finish it. Under the book was a letter with my name scribbled across it. I slowly opened it, seeing his beautiful handwriting.

Mandy excitedly jumped, wanting me to show them my new mark. Giggling, I moved my hair aside, showing off my new mark, making everyone looking at it in admiration. Marcus looked proud as he showed the exact same mark I had on his shoulder, a mark showing a black wolf standing on a rock above the ocean with a mermaid rising from the ocean as they were wrapped in the big white moon shining above them. "O, my Goddess. It is beautiful." Lizzy said, not being able to stop looking at my mark. "Well, it was about time you two." Damon said, slapping Marcus on his back, "But my warning stays, hurt her and you will experience my rage."

In the midst of his sentence, he abruptly stopped, his voice silenced as if he were frozen, his gaze fixed on my neck. "Caitlyn, who left that mark on your... your neck?!" Jayce's voice quivered, his tone unconsciously rising significantly. He pointed at my neck, his face displaying a mixture of disbelief. I followed his gaze, lowering my head and running my hand over my neck, sensing a faint bump. It was a bite mark, undoubtedly the result of the man from last night. My heart sank instantly, and my face lost some color. "Jayce, no, that's not it! You have to listen to me..."

With a sigh, Chloe reluctantly hands him the book. Valentine takes it, his eyes widening as he reads the title. "The Grimoire of Shadows," he whispers, a mix of awe and fear in his voice. "What is this?" "It’s our only hope," Dr. Percy says grimly. "But it comes at a great cost. Are you willing to pay it?"

It’s warm, pulsing softly. Lena walks in, carrying an old book wrapped in cloth. “I think I found something,” she says, sitting across from me. “This book is from the hidden library in the mountains. It belonged to the Moon Priestesses.” She opens it slowly, the pages yellow and cracking. Her finger stops on a page with a drawing…an exact copy of the mark on my arm. “The Mark of the Lost Moon,” she reads. “It appears only to those touched by both light and shadow. It’s the mark of a bridge. A soul who can walk between two worlds.” I blink. “What does that mean?”

I inhaled sharply at what I was seeing. “ You know what it is?” he questioned with hope in his eyes. I went back to the table where I had a bunch of books I was reading. Just a few minutes ago, I was reading a symbol book when I saw that exact one. I found the book and started flipping through it until I found what I was looking for. “There, that's the same mark,” I showed him. He leans forward to get a closer look. “It's not a mating mark,” He whispers.
