It seemed she wanted me to go close. “We don't even know what kind of book it is. What kind of book floats?” I responded, trying to make sense of whatever was going on. “You don't actually need to know, just find out the truth that's why you're here isn't it?” I nodded, determination forming in my eyes. That was truly the reason why I was here. I found out the truth. I immediately rushed towards the place where the book had settled, and then the pages began to flip on its own.

Mark asks mischievously. "What... what are you-" Before I can finish, his lips crash onto mine. My body stiffens. A wave of panic crashes over me. Oh no. I'm having another panic attack. But suddenly, Mark is ripped away from me. He hits the floor hard. Hovering over him-his chest rising and falling with barely restrained fury-is a beastly looking Zander. His claws are extended. His fangs bared. Atlas is on the surface. And he is livid. ---

It might be too tiny to notice its disappearance. I sat at the edge of the fountain and began flipping through the pages of the book. Dust rose like ash in the air, clinging to my fingers and filling my nose. Each page held strange drawings and markings, sigils of packs and accounts of battles so old even the elders of the packs no longer spoke of them. But nothing spoke directly of rheagal…nor Penelope. So why would her father want her to get this book? Frustrated, I flipped harder, pages snapping under my fingertips, until my hand reached for the envelope in my pocket.

Everyone was shocked as they stared at Mark's sudden appearance from the book's pages. Out of all the excitement, Jace suddenly staggered. It was as if his energy was being drained away. Jace hid his arm. The black rose runes on his body were increasing and expanding. Rain might not have realized it, but Jace's three colleagues were aware of Jace's increasingly critical condition. Rain needed to figure out what to expect. Excited cry? Clap? However, the atmosphere was too quiet to be broken by Adaline's words. "Mark, how did you manage to hide in that notebook?"

It had always been people. Lucien looked up sharply from the journal. "I found something." Every conversation in the room stopped. "What is it?" Rowan asked. Lucien flipped back several pages and pointed to a short paragraph. "This journal wasn't written as a history." "What was it?" Pearl asked. "A letter." He glanced around the room. "Written to someone." "Who?" Rosalie asked. Lucien read the first line aloud. *"If you carry the mark, these words belong to you."*

I asked, growing increasingly more concerned. "We don't know what happened, but Chase found them. Agent Marks was found dead at the scene." "WHAT?!" I unknowingly shouted, altering Jessica and waking Maverick from his sleep. Maverick began to cry, and Jessica picked him up, holding him in a tight hug. She looked over at me, but I didn't miss the concerned expression on her face. I could tell that she knew that something was wrong, and was desperate to find out what had happened. I switched the phone over to speaker phone, knowing that Jessica desperately wanted to know what had happened. Thankfully, Maverick was too young to understand what was going on.

“This… mark. It’s not just a scar, is it?” “Don’t be too fat, Marianne,” said Marianne, pursing her lips very tightly. She placed the book on the bedside table, and flipped the book to the ribbon marker. The parchment was yellowed, covered with symbols I didn’t understand, but the image in its center took my breath away: a woman with a glowing moon-shaped mark on her chest, standing under a full moon, wolves bowing at her feet.

I moved deeper into the room, fingers brushing across shelves lined with ancient books, scrolls, faded journals. Pack history. Bloodlines. Rituals. Then— Something caught my attention. A symbol. Carved into the spine of an old black book. My breath caught. Because I knew it. Or at least— Part of me did. Without thinking, I reached for it. The moment my fingers touched the cover— Pain exploded behind my eyes. Flash Fire. Screaming. Silver symbols painted across stone walls. A woman’s voice— terrified. “She has the mark!”

He groaned against my neck, and I felt his teeth graze my neck. Another wave was starting to build inside me, this one greater than the last. Pierce groaned against my neck, and I swore I heard him say forgive me before he sunk his fangs into my collarbone. The moment he marked me, the wave came crashing through me and it felt like I had left my own body. Pierce groaned and I could feel the moment he found his pleasure as well. Pierce carefully gathered me in his arms and held me close to his chest. I inhaled his scent deeply and found myself drifting off to sleep in his arms.
