I couldn’t sleep.
The clock on the wall kept ticking, slow and stubborn, filling the room with a rhythm that only made the silence louder.
Phoebe, of course, had no problem at all. She was fast asleep beside me, her arm flung across her pillow, drooling and snoring loud enough to wake the entire neighborhood. Her snores came in uneven bursts, sometimes sharp, sometimes long, like a little motor sputtering to life.
I turned onto my side, then onto my back, then faced the wall again. No use. Sleep refused to come.
