“You’re lucky we love you. I’ve been holding this rice for fifteen minutes and I am starving.”
A laugh escaped before I could stop it. It bubbled up from somewhere deep and tired inside me. I shut the laptop, shoved the files aside, and grabbed some plates from the break room. We sat cross-legged on a random conference mat, the food spread out like a feast. We talked about everything. Work. Memes. Our old school stories. For a little while, the pressure faded. I even smiled without guilt.
“I swear,” Gift said with a mouthful, “if I see another pitch deck open on your screen, I will throw your laptop out the window.”
