Piper’s fingers twitched against her pencil, but she didn’t speak.
“The Stonebridges are back with trouble. Digging about you,” he said finally, his voice flat and sharp.
Her pencil hovered mid-stroke. “I figured.”
“They want records. Your background. Statements,” he continued, stepping closer. “Framed as concern. Piper… do you have anything to hide?”
She met his gaze, keeping her voice calm. “I have nothing to hide. It’s fine.”
His eyes narrowed. “Really? You expect me to believe that?” His tone was deliberate, slow, meant to cut. “Because… people like you are always careful. Clever. Protecting themselves. Even if it costs everyone else.”
