It was slightly unnerving to be escorted like this, but neither Piper nor Felix seemed bothered.
We descended the steps that led into the heart of the city. Piper took great care in pointing out her favorite shops. She liked everything expensive, and the cool morning quickly turned to the heat of the midday. I was both exhausted and awed by her surprising stamina when it came to shopping. I had never seen such a dizzying array of dresses, sweets, ornaments, shoes, ribbons, hats, and perfumes in my life before.
“Lady Piper,” I said as politely as possible when we had exited the seventh boutique filled with shoes. “Would it be all right if we took a short break?”
