I lower the wall in my mind and wait for another spirit to pass some remarks, but everything remains silent. To think about, those spirits have been silent for a while. This gives me a hint that something else is wrong too — which I don’t know just yet. Shaking my head, I drop the towel and wear the dress and go to sit down on the chair placed on the left corner of the room. With a snap of my fingers, the rules book appears in the air and then drops down on my lap. It has a brown leather cover, bland but interesting. I open the book and turn the pages. One rule is written on each page in golden cursive writing. The pages are yellowish.

“How much of it is about the portal?” Cassidy asked, jumping right in. Ward carefully opened the book to a point about three-fourths of the way into the volume, which looked to be about three hundred pages long. The sheets were a discolored yellow, and the ink, had clearly changed colors in several places, varying from a dark black to a lighter gray. It was clear the entire tome had been handwritten. Cadence envisioned an ancient Vampire sitting down with squid’s ink or the blood of a freshly beheaded chicken to dip his crooked talon in a well and scratch each letter out on the page.

My conscience doesn't want to add fuel to the fire. Aiden shook his head, pointing to a few pages near the middle of the book. "No, I'm not talking about those pages. Look, three pages are missing right here." We all leaned in to take a closer look, and sure enough, Aiden was right. Three pages in the middle of the book were conspicuously blank as if they had been torn out. "What could that mean?" I said, my mind racing. "Did someone try to hide something in those pages?"

After reading the letter again and again for a minutes, she keeps it aside and opens the bag. The first thing that she takes out is a lilac satin fabric. When she holds it up, it looks torn and burnt from all sides. It’s soaked in red. Her nose twitches as she smells the blood. She keeps it on the table in front of her and takes out the next thing. A book. A huge thick book with more than 800 pages. It has a dark brown hardcover with golden edges. She opens the book only to look at letters and symbols that doesn’t make any sense to her. Pursing her lips, she keeps it aside too.

But my hand closed around empty space. My heart thudded so hard I thought it might crack a rib. I grabbed the poetry book and tossed it onto the bed, pawing through every page, every bookmark, hoping I’d misplaced it. Maybe I’d hidden it between pages, paranoid someone might find it in the drawer. Maybe— But page after page, there was nothing. Just dry printed words about love, death, betrayal and spring. Words that mocked the churning horror blooming in my chest.

Unlock it, and the empty pages shall be filled for you to read. I stare at the words for a long time. Read them again. And again. “What does that even mean,” I mutter under my breath. Within me. Unlock it. Empty pages. I flip to the next page. Blank. The one after that. Blank. I start flipping faster now. Page after page after page, all clean, untouched, mocking me with their silence. No hidden ink. No symbols. No diagrams. Nothing. Just white paper. My grip tightens on the book until my knuckles ache.

Crystal muttered, smiling as she was led by Angelica to sit by the nearby desk, a few steps after passing the 3rd row of shelves. Angelica placed the book down with a thud before holding the hardbound cover of the said book and flipped it open, the contents revealing printed images with words citated beside or under the photos. The pages itself seemed to be slowly darkening due to oxidation and time. The pages were fragile as if they will be torn just by a mere mistake of flipping them in an unruly way, which explains Angelica’s delicate actions.

My hand stops at the glass bubble and I avoid touching that part. There is a piece of gold string sticking out of the pages and I think it's a bookmarker. I turn to the marked page first. I'm curious to know what spell or enchantment was looked at last. The pages of the book are shiny and thicker than a normal page. It has a silver kind of tinge to them. I begin to examine the page that is marked with the gold string. It has a diagram of what looks to be the sun and all the planets around it.

“Feels like I’m not getting the whole package or so. The feeling of turning each page and… the smell of the book. The, no ads popping policy..” He nodded negatively and stared at me “Okay?” I hummed having an idea. “Fine, you can have the book but on one condition.” I said. “seriously?” he asked with a disbelief look. “Yeah. 64, 65, 66, 67, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72…” “25 pages.” He cut me off.

"What the…" No way that could be real and not one fucking dream. Anyhow I turned my bleeding hand, somehow, the blood only went for the book and not fall on the ground. After awhile, a click from the buckles of the book jerked me off balance and I landed hard on the ground. The hissing sound as the book independently opened made my eyes grew larger. "Place your right palm on every blank page." Blank page? There was no blank page when the book pages began to flip back and forth on its own. But then, right there and then before my eyes, blank pages started appearing, sewing their pages against the spine.
