The rest of the night passes somewhat pleasantly as we catch up with each other and talk about nothing serious at all. It’s nice to pretend that doom isn’t waiting for us right around the corner. It’s a flimsy and risky plan at best, and any number of things could go wrong.
We hunker down for the day in an abandoned house, taking turns to stand guard. When night falls, I remove the potion from my backpack. It had turned the palest shade of blue. “It’s ready,” I say.
