“You’re not doing voice rehab alone. I’ll look stupid with you.” That made me smile—an actual smile, the kind I feel in my chest more than my face. She pulled her hair up into a tighter bun and cleared her throat dramatically. “Alright, Mr. Mafia Man With No Fear,” she said in a mocking deep voice, “let’s start with exercise one.” she shifted closer, legs touching mine. “Okay,” she said, more softly now. “Breathing exercise. In for four… hold for four… out for four.” She demonstrated first—dramatic, slow, like she was teaching a child—and I followed.

"Let's do a final run-through. James, you know the script. Just speak from the heart, tell the truth, and let the world see what Harding has done." James nodded slowly, taking a deep breath to compose himself. He had rehearsed this speech countless times, but each time, the emotions threatened to overwhelm him. The grief, the anger, the betrayal… it was all too much to bear. "Okay," he said, his voice barely a whisper. "I'm ready." Alex hit the record button, the red light blinking on, signaling the start of the performance. James looked directly into the camera, his eyes filled with pain and remorse.

The woman gave a baffled half smile back, unsure of what to think of the strange woman driving away. The ride was smooth and uneventful. The podcast was getting to the good parts about breathing and vocalization. It commented on tone and inflection, different ennunciation methods, where to place the tongue while speaking, and how to shape the mouth. Liz tried each with mild enthusiasm. She listened to different podcasts almost daily, trying to perfect a variety of accents and speech patterns. Today, she needed to work on her southern accent as the role she played had a small short line that needed that distinction drawl.

I clear my mind and try to concentrate, I can feel a tingling sensation in my left hand and I swear I can hear a voice so I focus my attention on the voice as hard as I can.
