I looked out at the city — the same city that had watched every terrible thing happen to us, the same city that was now, tonight, simply the backdrop to something entirely good.
"I love you," I said. "Not the delivery room version, not the desperate version. Just — the ordinary, every day, choosing-you-again version."
"That's my favorite version," George said. "I love you too. Same version. Every day, for the rest of however many days we get."
Ian stirred against his chest, sighed, settled back into sleep. Somewhere behind us, Ashley started fussing in my mother's arms, the specific fuss that meant she wanted her parents specifically and nobody else would do.
