I stepped closer and my blood went cold. The headlines jumped out at me. "Animal Attacks in the Pacific Northwest." "Creatures with Glowing Eyes." "Unknown Predator Kills Multiple Victims."

But it is not mere animal that emerges—it is will and hunger and desperate need given form that knows no human restraint. My pulse quickened as I traced the words with my fingertip. The author's handwriting grew more agitated here, ink blots and crossed-out phrases suggesting someone writing in haste or distress. He fights it, always. Believes he can maintain control through force of character, through the strength of his human heart. But the curse cares nothing for noble intentions.
