STEIN The prey keeps on falling for the bait. All I did was throw some crumbs his way, and he started talking to me after giving me the cold shoulder for weeks. I had planned to give him more, but had to reduce it when I heard his request. He only wanted a billion. Giving him four times that amount was just my way of nudging him towards the cage.

My jaw is shaking so hard my teeth click together, the sound amplified by the dead, suffocating silence in the room. The darkness is absolute, but I can hear everything now. The floorboards in the hallway downstairs are letting out these tiny, agonizing groans under the weight of tactical boots. A gasp escapes me as the sight steals the breath from my lungs.

This time I hit the target in the soft spot on its neck and the beast spirals to the ground landing with a heavy and loud thud. I set off at high speed trying to catch up to the others. “They are turning away,” Finn calls out his sword pointing to the sky. Sure enough, as I look up, I see the remaining two prey birds circle us from overhead once then take flight up the mountain. I turn to look at Finn who is covered in dark goo. A blood-like substance. Out of all the creatures that crossed over the prey birds were the worst. They were harder to kill and even harder to detect until they were almost upon you. I wondered if that was the scent Finn had picked up on earlier.
