And that was the first warning. I sat on the edge of the cold slab they called a bed, eyes open, fixed, but unfocused. Staring into nothing. I hadn’t blinked in a while. Not because I wasn’t tired. I was. But sleep wouldn’t come. I’d say couldn't . That thing… that premonition that had gripped my spine all day, it was back. Stronger. Meaner. It dragged its claws down my back like it wanted to peel my instincts raw. Usually by now, they’d toss me that god-awful tray of dog food through the gate like they were feeding a rabid beast. I don't notice the strange, mechanical hum beneath my seat. I don't see the shadow of the trap I've already triggered. There is only a split-second of blinding, white-hot light and a roar that tears the sky open. The shockwave hits before the sound, a massive fist of pressure that crushes the air from my lungs.

Still, here I was, running through an unknown but known forest with the crimson-eyed predator running beside me. What did it mean? Something showed me this very night before it happened, as if in a warning. But a warning of what? The predator wasn't an enemy, this I knew for sure. I had no powers, and yet, I had this. This strange dream wasn't a dream but a premonition. If I had nothing else, I had this: the gift of sight. I knew I could trust this.

And where the fuck did the vampire come into all of it? An overwhelming sense of doom drowned my other senses. It felt like a warning. If I did not find a way to get away from Wyatt, the path he was taking me down would lead to that night. The fire, the death, the vampire, it was all going to happen.
