to the heavens. Tears pricked my eyes. He knew. He knew the turmoil of my soul, and his message was a direct, divine balm. Then I saw the next one, sent at 12:01 AM. It was from Locas. No flowery words. No scripture. Just stark, simple, and terrifying in its intensity. Locas: Happy Birthday, Millicent. The day belongs to you. Anything you want, it is yours. I smiled and whispered a thank you from my heart.

"There isn't a date." Claire leaned forward from the driver's seat. "Turn it over." I flipped the image. Scrawled across the back in faded blue ink were six words. The truth belongs to Lexi Morgan. My pulse quickened. "Who sent this?" Almost immediately, another message appeared on my phone. Don't trust anyone. Then another. Not even Ethan. My eyes widened. Before I could react, the messages disappeared. Deleted remotely. "What happened?" Ethan asked. I hesitated.

He growled, his eyes blazing. I frowned, my heart skipping a beat. "What messages Liam?" He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone and unlocked it. After a moment, he held it up to me. I stared at the three messages that were clear on the screen and, sure enough… The word ‘SEEN’ was as clear as day under the final text…

Miles: "Huh? You’re online? Then why didn’t you say anything in the group?" Madame Lee: "I was just messaging White-Coat privately… didn’t see the chat." Miles: "Oh? Did he reply?" Madame Lee: "No." Miles: "He hasn’t replied to me either… I just sent him a text message… nothing back." Just sent a text message… That matched exactly with the notification she saw on Louis’s phone earlier. The sender’s name had “Miles” in it. Adora’s pulse jumped. She quickly typed:

“I don’t know…You should come.” I walked into the living room. Alex looked up from the floor.“Mum, I think somebody sent you a message.” Lexa stretched my phone toward me. “I didn’t open it.” “I only saw the picture.” I took the phone from her, the message had come from Lena. My heart skipped a beat the moment I saw her name. Why would Lena send me a message? I frowned before opening it. The moment the picture appeared on the screen, my entire body became still.

“My baby’s going to college.” “Don’t cry.” “I’m not.” “You’re crying.” “So are you.” Damn it. I wipe my face. Mom takes a picture of the letter before I can stop her. “Who are you sending that to?” “Everyone.” “Mom.” Too late. Her thumbs are moving. My phone buzzes almost immediately. Lila: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Then: Laura: CONGRATULATIONS!!! Then: Beckett: GET OUTSIDE. I stare at the message.

After I turn five years of age and have my very own phone, I start receiving strange messages every single day. For some reason, the sender keeps referring to me as their mom. At 3:00 am, they send me another message. "Mom, I saw you in my dreams again. The rain is seeping into the attic. My stepmom told me to use a rag to soak up all the water, but the rag is too small. Even though I tried to wipe it up all night, it still wouldn't dry. Mom, I'm so cold and hungry. I miss you so much…" I tilt my head, looking at the rain pouring outside the window. I then earnestly reply, "Don't be scared, sweetheart. Where are you right now? I will bring you something yummy!"

I pulled three from the rack and laid them across the bed. Black. Burgundy. Charcoal. All the same, really. Just different words for invisible. My phone buzzed on the nightstand. Lily. Morning! Dr. Chen says if Friday's infusion goes well, I might be home next week. NEXT WEEK, Alicia! I stared at the message. Typed back. That's wonderful. I’ll come by after your infusion on Friday. I set the phone down. Three minutes later, it rang. Mom. I answered. "Alicia, sweetheart. Did you see Lily’s text?"

From: +90 xxxxxxxxx Lily, let's talk. What is his game this time? I rolled my eyes and ignored his message and then read the messages from my sisters, I sent them pictures of me that were taken on the mirror of the elevator and asked them if what they think of my outfit for today. I smiled and hit the send button and then reply to Daryl's message. I told him the location of the coffee shop near here.

Invited it. Then—he turned to face the traffic cam directly. And smiled. Elliot’s stomach turned. This wasn’t an accident. This was a message. But from who? And why use Tessa? --- Liam sat alone in his office, scanning the anonymous messages still flooding his phone. Each one darker than the last. “You took her from me.” “You will pay.” “She was never yours.” He thought it was Isabelle at first. But no—these weren’t her style. Her madness was messy, dramatic.
