Even dormant, origins were incredibly powerful and dangerous, the only ones who could activate and fully control origins were the individuals known as Regis. There were currently a dozen or so known Regis in Hyperion, and each Regis possessed an entity known as an echo, a virtual consciousness that existed within their crests, that allowed them to interact with origins. “Run.” The silver Source’s voice cut through chaos. Not a suggestion. A command wrapped in terror Lena had never heard from it before. She didn’t run. Couldn’t. Her eyes locked on the thing fighting the third Source. It was massive. Shapeless. Like darkness given weight. Where it touched, reality broke. Cracked. Bled something that wasn’t blood. “What is that?” she demanded. “The Primal. The thing that birthed all Sources. The original hunger from which all others descended.” The silver Source pulled her backward. “It should be sleeping. Has been sleeping for millennia. But we woke it. By changing. By evolving. By becoming something other than pure appetite.”

Landon froze for a moment. Then, he curled his lips into a smile and spoke softly near her ear. "Nothing gets past you, does it? Yes, it's related to Sam. Chaos has existed since the creation of heaven and earth. "Unlike other primordial beasts, he's absorbed too much of the world's corrupted energy. People say that when he awakens, the world falls into chaos. But that's not true. "He usually only awakens when there's uncontainable vengefulness somewhere. Wherever he appears marks the source of that darkness."
