[Juliet's POV] Deep into the night, I crouched on the city wall, handing energy crystals over like a machine. Alison waved her hand impatiently. "Hurry up. Quit dawdling. You're gonna drag everyone in this city down with you if you delay my progress with fortifying the walls." I remained silent as I handed another crystal to her. On the faint golden protective shield—visible only to me—the cracks spread wider and wider. All of a sudden, a ten-foot-tall mutant zombie thrust its arm right through the lightning and protective barrier. With an effortless slash with its sharp nails, it stumbled its way inside.

“Thanks.” “Too perfect. You military?” Jake raised the sleeve again. “SASR. Sniper First Class.” A grin flickered. “Who dares wins.” They said it together, a laugh cracking the tension. “This is Zak,” Jake told Kim and Jane. “Zak—Kimberly. Jane.” “Pleasure,” Zak said, crisp. Then to Kim, lower: “Keep it quiet for now, but… werewolves have overrun the city.” Kim held his stare. “You’re serious?”

His voice was shaking uncontrollably. "These monsters have been devouring too many survivors! Their strength has multiplied several times over! Everyone, be careful!" The entire base fell into chaos in an instant. The squad members scrambled to raise their weapons and engage the incoming tide of zombies. However, the Evolved were on another level entirely. One of them broke through the defensive line in a single motion. It locked its gaze onto Madeline, let out a guttural roar, and lunged straight at her. In that split second, something happened that made everyone freeze in disbelief.

The leg that used to limp looked strong now. "Daddy, don't say that. We're your babies." Yeah. They're my kids. Not monsters. Not monsters. It's the system. That's why they can talk. Even ready for it, I still flinched when Bubba spoke again. "We don't belong here." They were from thirty years in the future. The apocalypse had dragged on for decades. Zombies evolved first. I was nothing more than a surrogate they hired. Their original plan was to stress me out with a diet of high-cholesterol meat and the grief of losing loved ones, hoping I would die in an accident and they could inherit my dad's fortune and cash in on a fat insurance policy. However, when I jumped from the upstairs and ended up in a coma, only to wake up soon after, they panicked about being found out and crafted a fake reality around me, a true Truman Show. In the sterile quiet of the hospital room, the past year's nightmare played out again. They pumped me full of drugs that twisted reality, convincing me I was given a second chance at life.

Mira tried again, her voice steadying slightly, “what’s it like? You know, being a zombie? Or are you not technically a zombie? Maybe something else? Do you even eat people, or is that just a stereotype?” The creature didn’t move for several long moments. Then, slowly, it crouched down, bringing its face level with Mira’s. Mira froze, her breath hitching as the zombie’s dark, intelligent eyes bored into hers. It was unsettling—this close, she could see faint traces of what the woman had once been. High cheekbones, soft lips now cracked and dry, and hair that hung in brittle, tangled strands. “Okay,” Mira whispered, “this is getting a little too personal, Sally. Can you maybe step back a bit?

She patted her face to make herself more conscious. It's impossible. The eyes of the zombies are blood red, and their skin will quickly become old, dry, or decayed. Along with that, her long wavy hair and her bright emerald eyes are covered with tears. Her dress is mostly ripped, the rest being bloody. She is Zia. Zia is a 10-year-old mute girl living with her single mother.

There was something about him that made Jasper think that he just might be able to help him like once things settled down. If his information was correct, unlike the vampires and werewolves, the zombies weren’t sent from another dimension. They were humans whose humanity went bad. If Jasper was correct, zombiesm was caused by a virus of some type. If there was one thing that he was certain of it was that all viruses had a cure. He just needed time to find it.
