Shortly before the question papers were distributed, Sonia walked in with a bright smile plastered on her face as she waved to her girls who giggled in response, high five clapping her in the air. I had thought when she said she was taking a break from school, she had meant for a full semester or even a session. But she was back barely a week later, and Professor Hilton still had his job. Just then, it occurred to me that I had not spoken to the professor since after that time. Sonia didn't look in my direction. Not like I expected her to, I was just worried about how happy she seemed. It was almost like she had won and I had lost.

He stared at Sonya before turning his sight on his plate. Auntie Caroline cleared her throat. “He’s about to start to write his research proposal, Jackson! Clayton is a doctoral student in anthropology. Sonya, she holds a master's degree in literature!” Her voice proudly sounded and made Mr. Jackson sip his wine with his lifted two eyebrows as his fascinating expression. “You must be proud of them, Caroline!” Mr. Jackson jiggled his head as he kept eating his breakfast. “And you, Austin’s daughter, people say that you have published several reviews on your blog. Hengelbert has taught you a lot!” He smiled at Sonya in a warmer expression.

After the professor leaves, I wait, watching as her friends leave first before she gathers her things and heads for the door. She is still on her phone. Quickly, without wasting time, I follow her out of the class until she is halfway down the corridor. “Sonia,” I call out angrily. She freezes at the sound of my voice. And slowly, she turns around. “Daisy, hi.” Her face is trying so damn hard to fake an innocent confusion but she is failing woefully. “Class today was great, right?” “Cut the bullshit Sonia.” I close the distance between us, folding my arms. “What the fuck where you doing back there in class? I saw you watching me like some fucking creep. What was that?”
