Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Professor's Gaze.

Juliet Sinclair sat in the third row, with her back straight on the chair and a notebook opened before her on a desk. The lecture hall buzzed with the usual noise of students parking up, but she stayed still. Her phone had just vibrated in her bag and she already knew what the message said.

It was another tuition f*e warning.

She kept her face calm and raised her hand when Professor Harlan asked about the theme of forbidden love in literature.

"Love that breaks rules always ends in pain," she said clearly. "But people still choose it. That's what makes it powerful."

A few students nodded and Professor Harlan smiled and pointed at her. "Exactly. Miss Sinclair gets it again."

Juliet forced a small smile and inside, her stomach twisted. The email said if she didn't pay the remaining balance by next week, she would lose her spot in the program. She had danced until three in the morning last night just to cover her mother's medicine and now, this.

The side door opened and a tall man in a crisp white shirt walked in. The room suddenly went quiet and he moved like he owned the space. His shoulders are broad, his dark hair is perfectly messy and his eyes scanned the students once before he spoke.

"Professor Harlan, thank you for the warm-up," he said with his deep and smooth voice. "I'm Professor Adrian Knight. I'll be taking over this Literature course for the rest of the semester."

Whispers spread across the hall and Juliet stared. He looked too young to be a full professor, maybe early thirties, but his presence filled the room. He set his bag on the desk and turned to the class.

"Forbidden love," he continued, picking up right where they left off. "The kind that destroys careers, families, even lives. Why do we keep writing about it? Why do we keep reading it?"

His eyes moved across the rows and stopped on Juliet. She felt it like a touch, how warm, heavy and dangerous it was.

And for a second, neither of them looked away.

"Miss Sinclair," he said, reading her name from the seating chart. "You seemed to have strong thoughts on the topic. Care to share with the new professor?"

Juliet's throat felt tight, but she kept her voice steady. "People want what they can't have. Even when they know it will burn everything down. The thrill is part of it."

Professor Knight's mouth curved slightly and not quite a smile. "The thrill," he repeated slowly. "Or the fall?"

He stepped closer to her row. "Because in every great story, someone always falls. The question is whether they drag the other person down with them."

The way he looked at her made heat creep up her neck. Juliet crossed her legs under the desk and she told herself it was just the stress. Just the tuition email still burning in her mind but deep down within her, she knew it was not.

The lecture continued, but everything felt different now. Professor Knight moved around the front of the room with easy confidence. He asked sharp questions and he listened when students answered but his eyes kept finding her, Juliet.

Every single time, her pulse jumped when they lock eyes.

When the class finally ended, students stood up and started talking loudly. Juliet stayed in her seat a moment longer, pretending to write something in her notebook. She needed to calm down before she faced the real world again.

"Miss Sinclair."

His voice cut through the noise like it was made only for her.

She looked up and Professor Knight stood at the front of the now almost empty hall. The last few students were walking out.

"A word about your essay," he said. "Now."

Juliet's stomach flipped hard. She picked up her bag and walked toward him. Her heels clicked softly on the floor and when she reached his desk, she stopped a safe distance away.

"Yes, Professor?"

He leaned back against the edge of his desk and folded his arms. The white shirt stretched across his chest and up close, he looked even taller. His eyes were darker than they seemed from the third row.

"I read your paper on moral gray areas in classic literature," he said. "It was excellent. One of the best I've seen in years."

"Thank you," she replied quietly.

He watched her for a long moment. "But something felt... personal. Like you weren't just writing about the characters. You were writing about something real."

Juliet's fingers tightened on the strap of her bag. "I just tried to understand the characters deeply."

Knight tilted his head. "Most students write what they think I want to hear. You wrote what you actually believe and that's rare."

He pushed off the desk and took one step closer and the air between them felt thick.

"Tell me, Miss Sinclair," he said, in a lower voice now. "Have you ever wanted something you knew would destroy you if I took it?"

Her breath caught and the question hung there, heavy and loaded.

She could smell his cologne, and it smelled like something clean and expensive. She could see the small scar just above his left eyebrow and she could feel the way his eyes pulled at something deep inside her chest.

"I... think everyone has," she answered carefully. "At least once."

His gaze dropped to her lips for half a second before returning to her eyes.

"Interesting answer."

The hall was completely empty now but with just the two of them. The silence felt dangerous and Professor Knight reached into his bag and pulled out her essay. He held it out to her and when she took it, their fingers brushed.

Electricity shot up her arm and she pulled her hand back quietly.

"You should come to my office hours sometime," he said. His tone stayed professional, but something darker lived underneath it. "I'd like to discuss your ideas further and in private."

Juliet's heart pounded so hard she was sure he could hear it.

"I'll think about it," she said.

He gave a small nod. "Good."

She turned to leave, but his voice stopped her again.

"Miss Sinclair."

She looked back and his eyes locked on hers one last time. There was no smile or no softness this time but just raw intensity that made her knees feel weak.

"Be careful with the things you want," he said quietly. "Some fires don't just burn. They consume everything."

Juliet stood frozen for a second and then she nodded once and walked out of the hall, her legs unsteady.

The moment the door closed behind her, she let out a shaky breath. What the hell just happened? Why the hell I'm I reacting this strange?

Just then, her phone vibrated again in her bag and another problem she had no idea how to fix.

But right now, all she could think about was the way professor Adrian Knight had looked at her like he already knew her secrets, like he wanted to know more and like he might be the most dangerous secret of all.
