Warm blood splattered across the side of my face, carrying that sharp, unsettling smell of iron. He'd been shot. But he didn't make a sound, and the arm around me didn't so much as tremble. At the same time, by the faint moonlight coming through the windows, I caught sight of Julian nearby out of the corner of my eye. The instant the shots rang out, this man, who'd once sworn to protect me with his life, the Ward family's former head bodyguard, had thrown himself, on pure instinct, straight toward Amber. He'd pinned her body beneath his, and even after a stray round grazed his arm, slowing him down further, he never once let go of her.

“I’m frightened too. I don’t know who’s still out there, or what they want, or how much of my own life has been shaped by hands I never saw. But I know this.
