Ted whispered desperately, his face etched with worry. Farah smirked as Tandre reluctantly kneeled back down, his fists clenched in frustration. She reveled in his helplessness, the power she held over him feeding her twisted satisfaction. “You there—get up!” Farah commanded, pointing her gun at the bodyguard she had addressed earlier. “Follow my orders, or I’ll start shooting every one of you!” The bodyguard swallowed hard, his hesitation replaced with reluctant compliance. He was here to protect something or someone that clearly didn’t want to be saved. Chapter 1: The Safehouse The black SUV sped through the dark streets of the city. Bullets had stopped flying but my heart still slammed against my ribs. I sat in the back seat pressed low while my new bodyguard drove like the devil himself chased us. His name was Marco. Ex-military, built like a wall, with cold eyes and a jaw that never seemed to relax. My father, the boss of the family, had assigned him to me after the last attempt on my life.
