Born of Ash and Night
Pain explodes down my spine, but I don’t move.
Never move.
When the smoke clears, half the chamber is gone.
Bodies litter the floor.
And he’s closer.
“So fragile without it,” he murmurs, crouching just out of reach. His gaze traces the hollow in V’s chest where her anchor used to be. “She’s almost empty now. Did you know anchors scream when they’re used up?”
My vision goes red.
I surge forward—
—and the Queen catches my arm.
“Cain,” she says sharply. “If you lose control, he wins.”
