[Hawthorne] My hands are shaking as I make my way out of my apartment down to the main boulevard and down towards the train. The sky is still dark, the first rays of sunlight yet to crest the horizon and I can’t help but stop for a moment to look up at the fading stars. It’s so rare that I make it out of my rooms, and almost never when it’s still dark. Since the hellsbane plague began spreading from wolf to wolf across the continent, and we took over Moon River City as our capital, very few civilians are allowed outside for more than a few hours at a time.

This bastard shot me with silver bullet coated in wolfsbane. Raccoon moved immediately as one with grief and violence as the door slammed behind him. He was already striding toward me, fury in his eyes. I caught the glint of cold steel in his fist before the impact and he kicked Rourke’s leg, dropping him from the chair. Gunshots rang as he fired four shots into Rourke’s midsection, and the man collapsed to the floor unconscious. I slumped against the wall, my chest heaving ragged; Raccoon rushed forward and knelt down beside me immediately.

I stared at him carefully while cold unease slowly crawled down my spine. “That’s impossible.” “That’s what I thought too.” Jack pulled out his tablet immediately before placing multiple surveillance images across my desk. I looked down at them. And froze. Entire compounds burned black. Massive explosions. Destroyed ports. Yet somehow… Every surrounding civilian structure remained perfectly untouched. No collateral damage No accidental victims. No random destruction. Just Rico. Specifically Rico. “What the hell…” I muttered quietly. Jack nodded immediately. “That’s not even the weirdest part.” I looked up sharply.

The city didn’t. My phone vibrated against the metal table beside the cot, dragging me awake. I reached for it without hurry. The screen lit up with headlines. Lawson City Terror: Three Doctors Slain by an Anonymous Sniper. The Return of ‘Ghost.’ A quiet laugh slipped from my throat. “Return,” I repeated under my breath. I turned on the small mounted TV. A reporter stood outside the hospital, police tape fluttering behind her. Flashing red and blue lights painted everything in harsh color.

Then that accident happened. Riker and I were visiting another pack, working on making a deal with both the Solar Wraith Pack and Wraith Corporation when Werewolf Hunters barged in, their guns already firing bullets before anyone could react. One had managed to graze Riker’s head just enough to knock him unconscious. The Alpha we were visiting was shot in the heart and died just as his Warriors had appeared and killed the Werewolf Hunters in a rage.

The helicopter turned and flew southwest. There lay the mountains. My true home. A few days later, I was released from observation at a military quarantine hospital out of state. The news kept broadcasting the disaster in that city. The official report said a large-scale hallucinogenic incident had been caused by an underground hazardous chemical leak, and the city had been sealed indefinitely. No survivors. I sat on the hospital bed and looked at the sunlight outside the window. In my hand, I held the rosary's wooden cross. "Click."

"I think something bad is going to happen or it already did." {"Casey...are you sure you woke up properly?"} asked Rick slightly annoyed. {"There is no full moon tonight, it ain't till next week, and believe me I've been keeping track in case that asshole shows up again at either of our doorsteps, and there was nothing on the news about people mourning."} "I know what I saw Rick," said Casey frustrated. As the pool of blood spreads, I hear someone off in the distance scream and then I hear sirens. Eric grabs ahold of my hand and Ryder takes the lead before we head to the car and leave the scene, because the cops have been called and that spells trouble. On the way out of the city, I watch out the side window at all the people walking along, oblivious of what just happened. Are they all like those few, or were they just the exception? I guess I will never know, because I don’t plan on ever meeting another one as long as I live.
