Within moments, the heavens opened, and rain poured in sheets, drumming against the canopy, running cold across their faces and hands. Elara gasped as the sudden downpour soaked her cloak, but Ryker stood rooted in place, staring up into the storm with something like awe. “It’s as if…” His voice broke, caught between wonder and grief. “As if the goddess herself weeps for them.” The rain plastered his dark hair against his forehead, coursed down his cheeks like tears he no longer had strength to shed. For the first time since the smoke had risen, his breath slowed, some of the wildness dimming in his eyes.
