Bag after bag of plasma was pumped into my veins. One raw, guttural scream tore out of me, and then the sound of a baby crying filled the room. On my phone, the screen was still frozen on one last image. Jasper and Fiona were locked in a kiss beneath the Aurelian Tower. I held my crying son and let the tears fall without stopping.

With a swift movement, I peeled off the carbon fiber mask, taking a deep, ragged breath of the bunker's familiar, ozone-scented air. "Fifty million dollars in military-grade tech, completely stripped from Thorne's primary logistics line," Zero said, stepping out from the halo of his server monitors. A slow, rare smirk touched his lips, though his dark eyes remained intensely focused on me. "The underground boards are melting down, Vesper. Everyone is scrambling to figure out who just cut Malakai Thorne's throat in his own harbor."

Behind them, there was a small group of about five people, but I still felt outnumbered. I felt my body tremble and hugged myself; I feeling more unsure of myself than ever. I averted my eyes, feeling guilty. They already know, I told myself. I stared at the ground, trying to make some of that guilt go away, but instead a singed hand came into my view. More guilt came over me at the thought of all the dead bodies and how bad they looked. I looked closer, trying to make myself feel better by identifying the awful bodies of vampires we fought earlier.

She did a couple of breathing exercises until her heart stopped beating very hard against her chest. Vee looked into the mirror and saw that her face was flushed. She didn't mean to react to Brian's nakedness. She had only seen a few men naked, two men to be exact, her exes. But they weren't as hot as the greek god she just saw. She had no idea he had arrived or would even be naked in his room.

Just one. A single line of green text appeared on the main screen. REBOOT COMPLETE. Then, a second line. HELLO, MOTHER. I stared at the screen. Who are you? I typed. The cursor blinked. I AM ZERO, came the reply. AND I AM EVERYONE. I looked at Zero's body. Her eyes snapped open. They weren't white. And they weren't gold. They were black. Absorbing all light. She sat up. The leather restraints snapped like twine.

A ripple crawled across the floor like liquid glass, bouncing from one reflective shard to another. Ramirez’s voice fell to a whisper. “It’s moving…” The containment glass shattered inward with a shriek like tearing metal. Shards hung suspended for a breathless instant before clattering down in a storm of razor edges. Subject Zero unfolded from the wreckage, its body a grotesque shimmer between liquid and flesh. Limbs elongated in unnatural geometry, joints bending where no joint should exist. Its face — or something wearing the suggestion of one — tilted toward them, mirrored eyes glinting with a terrible intelligence.

I could only stare, numb, waiting for the end. A blur of motion. A sickening crunch. Zero stood over the dissolving corpse of the creature, his fist smoking. He hadn’t even looked at it. His actions were pure, lethal instinct. He wiped the black ooze from his hand, his cold gaze scanning for the next threat. His eyes passed over me without a flicker of recognition. And in that moment, a spark ignited in the hollow void inside me. It wasn’t power. It wasn’t the bond. It was rage.
