"You wrote a speech. JJ saw the notebook."
Duke sighed. "JJ has a big mouth."
"He gets it from his father." She kissed his cheek. "Read it. Or I will, off your notebook, in front of everyone, badly."
Duke pulled the notebook from his back pocket—he'd been carrying it all morning, hadn't found the right moment. Apparently the right moment had arrived whether he was ready or not.
He called the room to attention, which took a moment given the volume of conversation, but eventually quieted into the specific listening silence of a family that had learned to give space when one of them had something to say.
