She wanted me to go through them first to confirm that it was not before giving it to her to read." Charles asked, "What about the patterns and tricks? Is it the same as the one sent by Christin just now?"

"If you're not." She looked at me for a long moment. The specific and careful quality of it — a woman reading a man's face in the particular and unhurried way of a woman who had learned to read things carefully, who had grown up with a mother who noticed things, who had developed in the years since the specific and practiced ability to distinguish between the performed thing and the real one.
