Frowning, Katie interrupted a moment later as Glee clacked away at the keyboard. “There’s something you’re supposed to read.” “Hmm? Read?” “In the bookcase, Granna.” Katie crossed the room and removed something from the shelf, came back and set it on the corner of Glee’s desk hutch. It was a small, thin volume of some sort, with a worn brown cover and gold lettering along the spine. “Supposed to read it,” said Katie again, unsure of herself. Or rather, unsure how to proceed. “Chapter seven,” she went on furtively, “uh, page twenty-nine. Paragraph four . . . and five.” The girl fell silent, her pearly grays changing over to sea-green. “And six.”

It arrived without being sent for, and she let it be there, alone in her office at six forty-five on an ordinary Tuesday. She typed: *How badly?* *Overcooked by several minutes. I was reading.* *What were you reading?* *The book Felix gave me. Third attempt at chapter four.* She thought about this. *Is chapter four the problem, or is Felix the problem?* *Felix recommended it sincerely. Chapter four is dense. I am persisting.* *Persist through chapter four,* she typed. *It gets better.* A pause. *You've read it?* *Two years ago. Different edition, probably. Same chapter four.*

Caitlin sat in her large room in Dunvegan in Castle at a writing desk, looking out the window at the sunset sky. She examined the torn page McCleod had given her, holding it up to the light. She slowly ran her fingertips along the embossed, Latin letters. They looked and felt ancient. The entire page was so beautifully and intricately designed, and she marveled at the intricate colors along the paper’s edges. Back then, she realized, books were made to be works of art in and of themselves.
