I like imperfect characters. Relationships that are built over time. Real feelings, you know?” Alexei’s smile remained, but his eyes grew more attentive. “You don’t believe much in instant passions?”

"Whatever happened to love each other first then... then doing the deed after. Is everyone after physical contact only these days? What about getting to know each other first? Chivalry? Romantic date?" I sighed and stopped spinning, facing my laptop and visiting a bookstore's site to see what books sell. Ah, of course, my book wouldn't be in the top 10, and I didn't hope so; what's staring back at me is the top 10 best-selling books for the week, where five of ten are Erotic Romance books. She was fully expecting him to give it one glance, and put it down with a caustic remark about trash, at which she would mutter something equally caustic about literary snobs. Instead he scanned it for perhaps twenty seconds. It was ridiculous to feel embarrassed, but she did. Not because he was reading about the imaginative contortions of Dominic and Natalya, but because he was probably imagining her reading them and getting all hot and erogenous in the process. In fact, she had not. As scenes of rampant nookie went, it had been disappointingly unerotic - more like a DIY plumbing manual than anything else. ‘Jesus,* he muttered at last. ‘This is anatomically impossible.*

Archer asks Chloe, looking at me almost as if he did something wrong. “Not at all,” Chloe says with no hesitation. “I think it’s important to remove the stigma around reading romance. We as humans like sex. We like having it, watching it, and reading about it. As long as something is in the realm of being appropriate, if it gets you in the mood, go for it.” The waiter brings us our drinks and Chloe takes a sip of wine before going on. “And it’s no secret watching p**n or reading about people having sex can get you in that mood.” She turns to me again, gaze intimate. “Writing about it does too.”

I bit my bottom lip, shrugging. "What kind of books do you mean? There are motivational books, novels..." I trailed off, listing various genres. Colby rubbed his face, frustration etched on his features. "The book I'm talking about is...dark. Dark romance." I cocked my head, signing, "I do read that. Why? What's wrong?" Colby's eyes seemed to bore into mine. "Then you might know...have you ever had any fantasies? Like, reading them, did you ever imagine..." He trailed off, his gaze intense.

“She’ll probably spend the whole holiday in here if you let her.” I walked the aisles slowly, trailing my fingers over the books. Classics. Thrillers. A whole section of contemporary romance—Mirabel’s doing, mostly. She’d started collecting them in high school, said they were “escapist but smart.” I’d never read them. Too many happy endings. Too much hope wrapped in pretty words. I pulled one down at random. Dark cover, brooding man in a suit, and title written in gold foil: Claimed by the Billionaire. I snorted softly, then slid it back.

It was Brayan and someone else. Could that be his office? But it was on the other side of the house. I made a mental note to ask Elowen when next I saw her. I looked through the shelves searching for the perfect book to read. There were so many and I was confused on the one to choose. Nevaeh always mentioned romance was the best but I knew romance has a lot of cheesy things. I wanted more of action with a bit of romance and lots of erotica. I picked out a worn out book.
