After hearing her complaint, he subconsciously retorted, “How do you know that these things won’t happen in real life? It’s not entirely impossible.” The two people bickered and argued endlessly. Life itself was a movie. One would not expect it, but oftentimes, the reality could be even more dramatic than in the movies.

Isolated in mind but sorrounded in physical, Emily sat on a log of wood as she observed the crowd of friends who were savouring every moment of fun they were experiencing. It was summer holiday and unfortunately for her she had been trapped in this summer camp deep in the woods with these people, she rubbed her palms bringing a warm feel on it desperately trying to calm her nerves.

Your stupid little kids treat me like their real mother, while your husband chose me over you. Watching her distorted grin, I couldn't help but lament how innately selfish she was. "Did you guys hear that?" I asked softly. There had already been a camera installed in the living room's flowerpot, streaming everything that had just happened. Charlie had never really left. He had been sitting in the car with Dakota and Dominic, watching the entire exchange unfold in real time. Now, he walked back in with them and saw Cecilia slumped on the couch, completely deflated.

She really was a prisoner? Now, Georgia, in real life people don't do this sort of thing to other people. Oh, yes it's in the paper every day. Every day? Almost.

Lit up the dust motes dancing in the air. From downstairs came the sounds of street vendors. Children laughing. Cars passing. Real life. Right there. "Look at them. Living their lives. Crying and laughing over love and loss." "The floor you're standing on. The air you're breathing. The food you eat. Which one of these is virtual?" I turned around. Backlit by the sun. "Your heartbeat is real. Your tears are real. Pain is real. Love is real." "How are we paper characters?" "And even if we weren't? How do you know your 'real world' isn't just a book from a higher dimension?"

And for the first time in my adult life, normal feels perfect. Not boring. Not safe. Just real. Real family. Real job. Real life. Mine. Finally, completely mine.

"Like we’ve cut ourselves off from the 'real' world?" He looked up, his eyes meeting mine with a clarity that silenced any lingering doubt. "The 'real' world is whatever you give your time to. If you give your time to noise, noise is real. If you give your time to this—to the soil, to the water, to us—then this is the real world. Everything else is just static."

She wasn't entirely sure how to ask but took a deep breath and opened her mouth. "I would really like to take a bath. I feel so dirty. At my pack there was a stream I was allowed to use and wash my clothes in. Is there somewhere I can do that here?" Even with all the kindness she had been shown, Annalise was wary. Kindness could be used as a weapon to trick her. "A stream?! Anna, there's a bathroom right there. Why would you..." Etta trailed off, realisation dawning on her. "Ofcourse you can. Everything here is yours to use freely." She spoke softly and squeezed Annalises hand reassuringly.
