Drone cams focused on the prison entrance as rebels shouted into bullhorns. “This is what Obsidian built! This is her legacy! Elena Vestri will answer for the crimes of the machine age!” The crowd roared. Guns fired in the air. One rebel stepped forward with a handheld detonator. Another held a knife. I knew what was coming. I charged. Bullets sang. Damien shielded my father. I slammed the detonator from the rebel’s hand and snapped his wrist. But the man with the knife slashed across my side—blood sprayed as I fell forward.

It was my mum, “Go on, we will join you!” For a second, I was so unsure. But then I heard the sounds of bones cracking. Fur bursts through her skin and then my father. The guards stood standby with their arrows raised, waiting for Darius’s order. I prayed fervently that he would give me this one last thing. Perhaps, the god was asleep. “They are traitors, catch them by all means!” He ordered. Arden grabbed me and pulled me out fast. “No!” I screamed as I heard the sound of arrows being released. I turned back and that was when I saw my father fall. It happened so fast I didn’t get to react.
