Guns are too useless for me to fear.” She chuckled, taking a sip of her water.

“Maybe your superior wanted to get you fired because I told the higher ups here that I didn't want any disturbance.” He looked embarrassed. “I just thought—sorry. That was…” “It’s fine.” I slid in a fresh clip. “Appreciate the enthusiasm.” He nodded awkwardly and stepped back as I raised the gun again. Bang. Bang. Bang. Bang. This time it was four clean shots. Reed clapped once. “Okay sir, I’ll… leave you to it. Sorry again.” “No harm done,” I said, eyes still on the target. “Just… maybe don’t assume next time.”

“I bet I can outshoot you?” “Outshoot?” Simone gasps, looking over at Vince. “Jason, Vince and Ty thought it would be a good idea to put a mini shooting range in” Tiffany says, glancing at Jonathon who seemed unsure about accepting the challenge. “It’s a laser gun. Not a real one” she adds, giving him a smile. “I’ve never shot a gun before” Jonathon whispers to Simone and Tiffany. “Scott brags about shooting rabbits and snakes at his father’s vineyard.”

“Fine. You want in, you’re in.” They went to the armory room in the back of the club. Metal shelves lined with firearms, ammunition, and knives gleamed in the low light. Amy’s fingers skimmed along the collection before she pulled down a polished Colt 1911 and a snub-nosed revolver. Isadora grinned and took her favorites — a black Beretta M1951 and a sawed-off shotgun with a worn leather strap. “You ever notice,” Isadora said as she checked the Beretta’s magazine, “that people like us never really retire?”
