His thumb pressed under my jaw, forcing my head up so I had no choice but to look at him.
“Enough,” he said quietly, and then his voice dropped lower, heavier. “Tell me.”
The command hit me immediately. My chest tightened, my throat burned, my wolf stirred, and the words spilled out before I could stop them.
“I wanted to help,” I said, my voice strained. “I wanted to find the rebels and stop them before more people got hurt.”
He stared at me like he didn’t believe a single word.
“You expect me to believe that,” he asked. “That you ran off alone, ignored every rule, ignored your guards, ignored me, because you suddenly wanted to play hero.”
