“Go home, Emma.” Emma clenched her fists, turned on her heel, and stormed off. I watched as my younger self sighed heavily, rubbing her face before pulling out her phone. Apollo whispered beside me, “Now’s your chance.” I swallowed my fear and stepped forward. Younger Mia glanced at me, her expression unreadable. “Do I know you?” I forced a smile. “No, but I know you.” She frowned. “That’s creepy. What do you want?” I hesitated. How do you talk to your past self without sounding insane?

“And once we know more, we can hopefully end things.” “Yeah,” she whispers, though it is clear that she doesn’t really believe me. “Right.” Sighing, I get up and head over to Jose and the woman, drawing both of their attention toward me. “Hello,” I say, deciding it was the polite thing to do to introduce myself. “I’m Maverick, one of the ones you’ll be returning memories to.” “Mmmm.” The woman doesn’t say anymore as she just stares at me with dark eyes that look almost like bottomless pits that I can’t help but find myself getting sucked into.

The first text read. The second text came a second later. "Yeah I remember, what about that?"

"Subject must not remember." I whispered the words to myself, "But I remember now. And I'm not going to let them take that away from me."

"I don't care if you don't remember me. I will make you remember. I will build you a new memory. Just stay alive until I find you." ---

Just a slow shake, like someone trying to recall something distant—and failing. "I don't remember."

I think I'm going to love it. I just have to remember my safety word.

After he r mum left she decides to go outside and water the flowers.
