I am Zeiah, I grew up thinking that everybody around me is ordinary and I am like them, but that's what I thought. I remembered everything, from the growl of that notorious creature, the slashing of the swords, and the explosion, all of it was clear. I close my eyes, quivering into the ideas which my mind could only bear. How I wish everything were just a nightmare. I let out a deep breath and found myself in the middle of nowhere.

"That is always how it starts." Luna moved closer despite herself. Beyond the opening was a narrow chamber. Unlike everything else they had discovered, it contained almost nothing. A stone table stood in the center. Something rested on it. A book. Luna sighed. Darius looked at her. "Absolutely not." "It's a book." "The last book we opened released thousands of forgotten people and several memory-eating creatures." "That was technically the building." "I'm not interested in technical distinctions."

Emma later went upstairs to her brother's room. James' room was filled with things that he had insisted on carrying from Mina's place. He adores his things and wishes to take them with him wherever he goes. Emma faked a gasp seeing the room. On the bed, the blankets were covered by plushies and coloring books while color packs were laid on the nightstand unevenly. Mina had spoiled him a lot. Emma began to organize her brother's belongings. She placed the plushies on the bed, and neatly stacked the coloring books and packs on the nightstand. When she finished, she stood back and felt a warm wave of nostalgia wash over her.

Or so he told himself, because her body was something else that he really, really wanted to touch, to taste, and to savor. The meeting closed with final remarks from Kole and Crandon because they each had to have the last word, as usual. The family, friends, siblings, and coworkers filtered out of the room, papers in hand, plans forming. And the legacy kept moving just like clockwork, one tick at a time.

A folder auto-opened on the desktop: Failsafes > Chimera > Internal Reports. Inside were emails between board members, meeting transcripts, and black-budget allocations. Dozens of mentions of Roland and James. One thread stopped my fingers cold. Sender: Roland Larsen To:[REDACTED] Subject: Dante knows. A contingency plan is needed. My hands trembled. It was dated weeks ago. The time when Dante's ongoing building collapsed without valid reasoning. Suddenly, the lights flickered, and a soft beep followed. Then another one, closer this time. I gazed at the door and then at the laptop. Someone was trying to remotely wipe the files.

"You mentioned a book, Reminder. My sister... Lyra. She sent you to return something?" "The Ledger of the Unborn," the girl said. She reached into her cloak and pulled out a small, pocket-sized book bound in white leather. It looked sickeningly clean. "She says the first book was for the parents. This one is for the legacy." Kaelen’s shadow-mantle flared instinctively, a dark mist coiling around the legs of his chair. The Reminder didn't flinch. If anything, the silver in her eyes glowed brighter.
