The Work of Grace

The Work of Grace

Kristen Leedashing through the snow in a pair of broken skisimagine yourself in a frozen forestthere was a cold lady who swallowed some snowwalking together with a living crystal of snow
Inside, a hammer flips forward smoothly, returning silently to position without a string to strike. “It’s a box grand. Not common anymore. This one’s a hundred twenty-five years old.” Opening the lid wider, I let my friends look about inside. “I found a local guy who’s guiding me restoring it. He can tune it for me if I get it working, but he doesn’t carry or make parts.” “And why would you be restoring a musical instrument, Rob?” Dan leans inside the doorframe, ankles crossed and arms tucked over his chest, a knowing smile on his face.

Rene whispers, his voice shaky with emotions as tears leak from the corners of his eyes, streaming down his temples. Lyrien's hands firmly grasp his shoulders, his determined gaze, locking onto Rene's tearful ones as he forces him to be still. He swipes the rag and healing water gently on Rene's neck, but the action only seems to provoke another wave of tremor, the green toxin crawling like a dark web to settle above Rene's chest. Lyrien grows instantly still, halting his action. Why is it getting worse?

The dynamic between the characters is different, and that is intriguing. It's no repetitive plot, and I really like Lyrien. Despite his temper and darkness, he loves his beautiful ,naive, and sometimes stubborn angel Rene. And I love Kai and Soral they are so different, bouth being Omegas.

So deep. “I need to find her,” Lyra said. “I need to reach her again.” Nyxar finally moved, stepping into the sunlit ruin. Dust curled around his boots. “Then do it. Here. Now. This place will carry your voice further than any prayer.” She hesitated, but then slowly nodded. Drawing in a shaky breath, Lyra slid from the stone altar and sat cross-legged in the dirt and vines. The floor was cold beneath her, but she grounded herself in it. Closed her eyes.

My hands worked away as I began to massage the almost-cold heart. Lyra released some vitality into the heart, all the while pretending that she was only massaging it. If she had been directing me to do this, the warrior would have been long dead. It was a good thing she took over when she did. We nearly lost him. “I need a thread and a needle. Also get me…” I listed everything I needed to stitch the warrior up after the heart seemed to have returned to good condition. To my utter dismay, both Madam Zorah and her girls just stood there and watched me like I was crazy.

Each passing second feels like an eternity, and I desperately yearn for a glimmer of hope, a sign that he'll pull through this torment. Desperation laces my voice as I turn to Lila, seeking any glimmer of hope. "Lila, please," I implore, "can't you do something? Can't you stitch him up?" Her expression is filled with empathy, but her answer is heavy with regret. "I wish it were that simple, Lyra," Lila replies gently, "but his wounds run deep, far beyond what regular stitching can mend. The damage inside him is extensive, and it's preventing his body from healing."

She saved my fucking life. None of this was chance. How could I have missed it? How could I have been so bloody blind? Ly’s not just powerful… She's not just a lycan. She’s a damn weapon. My gaze drops to the silver bands around her wrists, and a sound answers me. A tiny crack. And another. A thin fracture races across one of the bangles. Then another splinters through the engraved runes. “No way,” Lyra seems to finally find her voice. The silver groans. Hairline fractures spread faster now, branching like lightning across both restraints. The ancient runes begin to distort.

"But please, let me watch Leo grow up. Even from a distance." "We've already lost one child. I can't lose Leo, too." I took a small box from my purse. Inside lay the burnt, deformed iris ring. I had taken it to the finest artisan, who repaired the cracks not by hiding them, but by filling them with veins of pure gold, a technique inspired by kintsugi. It was covered in scars, but it was stronger and more unique than before. "Celeste..." Tears streamed down his face, soaking the blanket.

“I know it’s painful. Not just physically, but emotionally and psychologically.” Lyrian’s expression hardened with resolve. He couldn’t take away all her pain, but he could ease some of it. “Let me help you with the physical pain, at least.” He positioned his hand above the severed mark, not quite touching her skin. Power gathered in his palm, ancient magic that pulsed with golden light. Slowly, carefully, he released it into her. The golden energy flowed from his hand into her body through the damaged bond site. It seeped into muscle and bone, into blood and spirit, working to heal what had been torn.

Aria commanded softly, her own eyes shining with unshed tears as she witnessed the profound, miraculous healing occurring in her tent—a healing that had nothing to do with herbs or bandages. Aria placed her hands on Lyra’s dislocated shoulder. She locked her grip, took a deep breath, and with a swift, practiced, and deeply forceful motion, rotated the joint. A sickening pop echoed in the tent, followed by a sharp cry from Lyra. But instantly, the horrific tension in Lyra’s arm released. The joint was seated. Xander practically collapsed in the corner of the tent, sliding down the canvas wall until he was sitting in the dirt, his face buried in his hands. The terrifying ordeal was over.

This is not about Lyra. “Then what is it about?" I asked , my voice breaking. "I cannot repair something I don't understand Lily. Please just fucking talk to me!” “There's nothing to fix. This is how things are supposed to be.” "Why can't I fix it?” “Because it was never going to be fixed!" she growled, for the first time her voice shaking. "What we had, it was a mistake, you know it too.” I gazed at her, the words ringing with the force of a chest punch. "A mistake?"

The moment I noticed a snapped string on my violin, my heart sank—but then I remembered how resilient these instruments can be. Broken strings are absolutely repairable, though the approach depends on the type of damage. If it’s a clean break near the peg, you might salvage it by rewinding the remaining length, though the tone could suffer. For splits near the bridge or tailpiece, replacement is usually wiser. I’ve experimented with splicing thicker strings like the G or D in a pinch, but it’s a temporary fix that sacrifices stability. What fascinates me is how even repaired strings carry a story; one of my student violins still has a hastily tied E string from a frantic recital prep years ago.

That said, modern strings are surprisingly affordable, and swapping them out preserves the instrument’s integrity. I keep spares in my case after learning the hard way during a chamber music rehearsal. The real magic lies in how a fresh string transforms sound—like opening a window in a dusty room. Some purists insist on replacing full sets to maintain tonal balance, but for beginners or budget-conscious players, targeted repairs can buy time. Just avoid duct tape (yes, I’ve seen it attempted).
