Then he went back to dinner. Harper sat at his kitchen table and watched him cook and thought that this, this specific ordinary thing, was what she had not known she was waiting for. Audrey had been in the city for two weeks when she called Harper at ten-thirty at night. Harper was in bed with a strategy document she was supposed to be reviewing and was not reviewing because her mind kept drifting to the Robert Wells Foundation annual report she had found online that afternoon. She had been reading her father's name in formal documents and turning it over like an object she was learning the weight of.

For them, a small gesture from Leon warranted a return of goodwill. Harper’s visit to the company with her child and her attitude toward Seraphina did not escape Seraphina’s attention. It was clear that Harper hadn’t given up. She seemed to be testing the waters, trying to gauge the relationship between Seraphina Arden and Leon Everhart. If Seraphina had responded in a way that suggested closeness with Leon, Harper could use that as a pretext to feign jealousy, go back to Leon, and start an argument about divorce—all while blaming everything on Seraphina and tarnishing her reputation.
