Lisa was supposed to mate with Alpha Kain. Her reputation has to be destroyed—only then will he accept Xina."

A quiet memory surfaced inside my mind. I had read this before in my past life. The story had stayed with me for years because of how bittersweet and beautiful it had been.

Through the window, I see some of the Twiceborn lift their heads in perfect unison, sensing the shift, and deep in my chest, something old and bright and terrifying unfurls like a sunrise preparing to fight the night.

Handing it over to me, his eyes looked gloomy. “You won’t find comfort in these pages,” he said. “But you may just find what you are looking for.” I opened carefully, my fingers trembling and sweaty all of a sudden, the pages smelled old, worn out and ripped off at the edges. On the first page, written in red ink fading and peeling, were the words: “The Blood in Her Name.” “What is this?” I asked, the title multiplying my fears. “An account of wolves born with what we called... dark spirits.” He folded his hands across his chest as he spoke. “Wolves who walked two paths at once, light and darkness, peace and destruction.”
